The One-Color Repeat Rule
July 6, 2026
Here’s the styling principle I use more than any other, and it takes ten seconds: pick one color in your outfit and let it appear exactly twice.
A blush shoe that repeats the blush in your scarf. A white knit that repeats the white in a printed skirt. Gold jewelry that repeats a gold belt buckle. That’s it. The repetition tells the eye this was decided, not defaulted, which is what “put together” actually means.
Three ways to use it tomorrow morning:
- Print first. Wearing a pattern? Pull its quietest color and repeat it in your top, shoe, or bag.
- Accessory echo. Two accessories in the same tone (scarf and shoe, earring and belt) count as a repeat.
- Tonal cheat. Head-to-toe neutrals? Repeat a texture instead: two ribbed pieces, two satin pieces.
The repeat is doing the work a stylist does: it creates a reason the pieces are together. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it, and getting dressed gets faster.
Want the full version of this system applied to your actual closet? That’s The Taste Test: two hours, two closet areas, and your own formulas to keep.
